Cantor Elias Schnipelisky

ELIAS (ELIYOHU) SCHNIPELISKY, 1879-1947

Elias Schnipelisky (Shnipelisky) was born in Vilna, Lithuania, in 1879 and died in the Bronx, New York, in 1947. According to _The Musical Tradition of the Eastern European Synagogue_ by Sholom Kalib  (Syracuse University Press, 2002), Schnipelisky was a “composer, conductor, and teacher of Eastern European liturgical music; choir leader in various synagogues across Eastern Europe; immigrated to the U.S. in 1908; associated with a number of the most celebrated cantors of his time; conducted choirs for Berele Chagy, Mordechai Hershman, Yossele Rosenblatt, and Arye Leib Rutman, and composed recitatives for Hershman and Rutman; published three volumes, entitled Shire Zimro (1910), T’filos Eliyah (1924), and Nishmas Eliyahu (1949).”  He taught Cantor Jonah Binder, and additional Schnipelisky manuscripts are located in the Binder collection at the Jewish Theological Seminary library.
